Timecode

Time-code for TV. There are 25 frames per second for standard TV in UK.

P.A.L. - phase alternating line

25fps - there are 2 fields per frame. Therefore there 50 fields per second.

Time-code for shoot:

H  M  S   F
01:00:00:00
                01
                02
                ...
                24

Ends at 24 because the frame starts at 0. Then it goes to 1 second etc.

Time of day for 1 day shoot and synchronise the camera's to this time.

Example:

18:52:00:00                 - Jam Sync - all the camera's start recording at this time. Several Camera's -
same time-code

3x SD cards - label them: A,B,C

Decide before shoot what each camera is doing e.g. framing etc - wide shot, close up etc

Summary:

Ensure that all camera's in a multi-camera shoot start on the same time-code, for example all start at 01:00:00:00.

Also if its a 1 day shoot start all camera's at the same time of day for example 18:52:00:00. To ensure they all start exactly the same time and have the same time-code you need to jam sync them.

When using multiple camera's ensure you label each camera's SD card A,B,C etc.

Timecode Research:

James Fox taught us that the edited master (the final piece) timecode in point is 10:00:00:00.

However you should start at 09:58:00:00 so you can have the following:

30 seconds of black video.

Then 1 minutes of bars and tone (this is to ensure the camera has sound and colour/ legal gamete)

Then you have 30 seconds of a T.V. clock.

Free Run is best used for 1 day shoots. In this setup you use time of day to sync multiple camera's. Make sure to label each SD card A,B,C etc. Using time of day is very good to keep your footage organised and you can easily find your clips according to time and date.

You can also use 'REC RUN' to sync camera's - ensure you start the timecode at 01:00:00:00

To set up free run you need to go onto the TC/UB Setup menu and select  TCG sub-menu and then press "Free Run".

To set up the time and date, you need to first off all, select the TC Preset from the TC/UB Setup menu and then click yes on the sub-menu.

You then need to select the correct time of day and ensure the other camera's are set to the same time as well.

To setup "REC RUN" go onto the TC/UB setup menu and just select REC RUN on the TCG sub-menu.

For sound when using an external microphone such as a Shotgun microphone ensure that it is connected to Input 2. Then ensure insure that input 2 is selected to "MIC" and you select "ON". Now the external microphone is ready to use and is being powered by the camera - this is called 'Phantom power'.

Also ensure that on the audio control panel that Channel 1 is selected to 'INT(L)' and that Channel 2 is selected to 'Input 2'. This means that audio is being recorded by both the internal microphone and the external microphone - this is advised as it means that if the external microphone fails or you forget to switch it on, you still have audio recorded from the internal microphone.

ND Filter - neutral density filter (it allows less light to enter the camera)
